Sayyiduna Mu`awiya b. Abi Sufyan (d. 61 H)

Appointed by Sayyiduna `Umar as Amir over Damascus, served for 20 years, then as a Caliph for another 20 years.

Buried in Bab al-Saghir.

However, some say that Mu`awiah's was buried in the qibla wall of the Umawi mosque towards the Amara castle, in the place that people call the grave of Hud (though Prophet Hud (s) is unanimously buried in Yaman), in order to protext him from the Khawarij – just as `Ali b. Abi Talib and `Am b. `As are buried in the  walls of the mosques of Kufa and Cairo respectively [quoting Ibn Katrhir] They hold that the Mu`awiah that is buried outside Bab al-Saghir is his grandson Abu Layla Mu`awiah b. Yazid b. Mu`awiah, virtuous ascetic who ruled for 40 days. [ZaSh p. 48-49:f5]
